J. Rieger & Co. | Kansas City, Missouri
Originally founded in 1887 in Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms area, J. Rieger & Co., was one of many distilleries that all but went extinct after Prohibition passed in 1919.
Then, in 2014, a whole 95 years later, it was famously resurrected by Andy Rieger, Jacob Rieger’s great-great-great grandson, and business partner Ryan Maybee, a professional bartender and restauranteur. After outgrowing their original West Bottoms space in 2018, the distillery purchased the former Hiem Brewery’s bottling house in the industrial Electric Park district of Northeast Kansas City. Outfitted with 45,000 square feet of space, they began renovating to become a facility for not only distillery production, but a destination for food, tours, and history buffs.
Now, with a unique facility that functions for the many facets of its operations, J. Rieger & Co. is once more an original, flourishing, native Kansas City business.
